Premier League: Liverpool Look Well-Equipped to Defend Their Title

Like Napoli in Serie A, Liverpool are already thinking ahead to the 2025-26 Premier League campaign. And the Reds seem like a few steps ahead of the chasing pack because of what they’ve accomplished in the summer transfer window thus far.

Fresh from winning the Premiership, Arne Slot’s side has already begun retooling their aging roster by adding some fresh pieces that could make them even more formidable, and the Premier League 2025 odds have Liverpool as an odds-on favorite for the championship next term.

Elsewhere in Manchester, City and United have also worked the phones in the past few weeks, looking to catch up with Liverpool. The Sky Blues have completed three key signings, giving them a slight edge over their inter-city rivals, who only have one thus far.

In case you missed it, here are some of the notable transfer news, courtesy of today’s SBOTOP Premier League 2025 updates.

Liverpool spent a fortune to nab star quartet

Liverpool have had a busy offseason. After handing extensions to Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, the Reds let go of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Nat Phillips. In return, they paid around £200 million to acquire Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Wirtz’s arrival is a huge boon to the Reds’ midfield, which already has Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, and Dominik Szoboszlai. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder was voted Bundesliga Player of the Season after notching 11 league goals and 11 assists for Bayer Leverkusen this past season.

Kerkez should provide competition for Andy Robertson at the starting left-back position. Jeremie Frimpong will likely compete against Conor Bradley for the starting right-back position, though Slot could use him as a backup to Mohamed Salah on the right wing. Mamardashvili is a younger goalkeeper alternative for Alisson, who will turn 33 this October.

Despite these additions, Liverpool seem far from done in the transfer market. They are reportedly keen on selling Andy Robertson and Darwin Nunez, while engaging in a bidding war against Arsenal and Manchester United for Viktor Gyokeres, who is fresh from an outstanding 2024-25 campaign with Sporting.

Manchester City have reloaded

Manchester City completed the signings of Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, and Tijjani Reijnders, and all of them have already appeared for the Sky Blues in the ongoing 2025 Club World Cup, held in the United States.

Cherki already scored his first goal for the club during their 6-0 rout of Al-Ain last Sunday evening. The former Lyon man came off the bench and fired a sharp, low shot in the 89th minute to give an assist to Erling Haaland. The arrivals of Cherki and Reijnders should strengthen Manchester City’s midfield, which already has Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez, Rodri, Phil Foden, Matheus Nunes, Claudio Echiverri, and Nico O’Reilly. Ait-Nouri will provide competition for Josko Gvardiol at the starting left-back position, while Bettinelli is the team’s third goalkeeper behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega.

Next on Manchester City’s list is finding another natural right-back (alongside Rico Lewis) because Kyle Walker is expected to leave the Etihad this summer after a brief loan stint with AC Milan. They have been linked with Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento and Flamengo’s Wesley Franca, but no deal is imminent just yet.

Manchester City failed to defend their Premier League title this year, finishing third in the standings with 71 points, 13 points adrift of Liverpool.

Manchester United’s transfer progress has bogged down

Manchester United supporters were surprised when the club quickly completed the acquisition of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. They’ve been linked with a host of players since they need to rebuild the squad under Ruben Amorim, but since Cunha’s arrival, the Red Devils have yet to confirm their next signing/s.

A key reason why they’re struggling to add new reinforcements because the Red Devils couldn’t get rid of their deadwood players. Manchester United are reportedly keen on selling the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Jadon Sancho, but they’re getting lowball offers from rival clubs.

The Red Devils also received offers for Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, with the former fetching a £100 million transfer offer from Al-Hilal and the latter suggested to join Al-Nassr. However, it seems that the veteran duo are keen to fight for their spots at Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s biggest need is a proven and prolific striker, considering Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles this year and Joshua Zirkzee’s injury. Ruben Amorim’s side is linked with Viktor Gyokeres, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Victor Osimhen. They’re also working hard to pry Bryan Mbeumo away from Brentford.
