VfB Stuttgart 1-2 Bayern Munich
You better believe it!
This DFL Supercup Final showed just why they remain the team to beat in Germany.
This SBOTOP scribe is not being particularly wise when he tells you the Bavarians are overwhelming favourites to retain the Bundesliga this season.
But when you see German Super Cup 2025 highlights as I did this evening – and this was a close encounter – it’s still hard to see any side toppling the big-spending champs over a nine month marathon.
Highlights of the game
Bayern Munich last won the trophy in 2022, since when Dani Olmo had turned on the style with a superb hat-trick as RB Leipzig gained revenge 12 months later.
Last year, 10-man Bayer Leverkusen defeated Stuttgart on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
So could Stuttgart do what Leipzig did and bounce back in the competition now named in honour of their former favourite Der Kaiser?
The German Super Cup 2025 betting odds didn’t think so against the German Cup winners last season, and actual runners-up in the Bundesliga two seasons ago.
Both were fine achievements, but could such success really be maintained?
To prove the point, Bayern flexed their muscles and, 12 months ago, in their quest to reclaim the title as Germany’s number one, Bayern swooped on Stuttgart to acquire the services of Japan defender Hiroki Ito.
They have tried to do similar this summer and reportedly submitted a new offer for Nick Woltemade earlier this week.
He spearheaded the Stuttgart attack in this one as the hosts and Cup holders welcomed the Bundesliga champions in the inaugural Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
The annual Supercup, which features the winners of the previous season’s two domestic titles, was officially renamed in honour of the late Beckenbauer last December.
The Kaiser’s boyhood club, Bayern, fielded new signing Luis Díaz and England captain Harry Kane in a potent attack and they were both on target as the champs, who reclaimed the Bundesliga title last season, ultimately lifted the
Supercup for the 11th time.
Bayern have had little time to rest this summer, with their run to the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals followed up by friendly victories, over Lyon, Kane’s former side Spurs and Grasshoppers of Switzerland.

Those games gave manager Vincent Kompany time to blood former Liverpool star Díaz alongside fellow new arrivals Jonathan Tah (from Bayer Leverkusen) and Tom Bischof (from Hoffenheim) and Tah also started in this one.
It took just 18 minutes for Bayern to break the deadlock as Kane slammed home a loose ball from the edge of the box after a pass from Michael Olise.
It wasn’t all one way traffic and veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was called upon to make two fine saves in quick succession, firstly to deny Josha Vagnoman and then a sprawling stop to keep out Woltemade.
A super block from stand-in goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow denied Kane a second just after the hour mark before his compatriot prevented an equaliser, throwing out an arm to keep out Jamie Leweling’s deflected effort.
The next goal always seemed key and it was Bayern who delivered when debut boy Diaz was left unmarked and rose to head home a Serge Gnabry cross for number two.
That was that and Bayern fans celebrated knowing the first piece of silverware of the new campaign was all but in the bag.
Stuttgart lost seven of their final 10 home matches last term and, while Leweling raised the briefest of hope for the hosts by heading home in the fourth minute of stoppage time, the Bavarians were worthy winners.
Key statistics
This was the third time Bayern and Stuttgart have contested the Supercup. Bayern have won all three meetings, including 5-2 in 1986 and 3-2 in 2013.
Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß is the nephew of Bayern’s honorary president Uli. He led Bayern’s reserves to the 3. Liga title in 2020 and Stuttgart to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga, a point clear of Bayern, in 2024.
This was his 100th competitive game in charge of the Swabians.
Kane has scored seven times against Stuttgart in just five games. This was his 97th competitive goal for the club, despite only joining them two years ago.
Neuer has now joined former teammate Thomas Müller on a record-equalling eight German Supercup wins.
What’s next?
Now for the start of the 2025-26 Bundesliga.
Bayern welcome RB Leipzig to town next Friday (August 22) for what should be a cracking league opener. Meanwhile, Stuttgart travel to Union Berlin the following day.
