Bundesliga: Koln Must Beware of the Wolves’ Bite

Two undefeated teams in the German top-flight are set to go head-to-head this Saturday, as VfL Wolfsburg host Koln at the Volkswagen Arena.

​VfL Wolfsburg opened their 2025-26 campaign with a 9-0 beatdown of Hemelingen in the DFB-Pokal first round and a 3-1 win over Heidenheim on the first matchday before a 1-1 draw against Mainz, where they were reduced to 10 men. As a result, Paul Simonis’ side is sixth in the Bundesliga table with four points, level with fourth-seeded Borussia Dortmund and fifth-seeded St. Pauli.

On the other hand, Koln are third in the standings after back-to-back league wins over Mainz (1-0) and SC Freiburg (4-1). Lukas Kwasniok’s side also advanced to the DFB-Pokal second round after defeating Jahn Regensburg 2-1.

VfL Wolfsburg secure more reinforcements

VfL Wolfsburg have had a busy summer transfer window, which helped them have a brisk start to the 2025-26 campaign. 

Mohamed Amoura, who first arrived at Volkswagen Arena on loan last year, had his deal made permanent this summer, and the Algerian striker was on the scoresheet during the team’s opening day win against Heidenheim. Aaron Zehnter, also a key addition for the team this summer, opened his VfL Wolfsburg account by scoring within the first nine minutes against Mainz.

Before the international break, the Wolves completed two more signings, centre-back Jenson Seelt and forward Adam Saghir. Seelt arrives on a season-long loan deal from Sunderland, while Saghir joins Die Wolfe on loan from RB Salzburg.

VfL Wolfsburg are reportedly considering giving Jonas Wind a contract extension. This is a surprising development because Wind has played just one minute so far this season, leaving many to wonder whether he was part of the club’s long-term plans.

Moreover, Paul Simonis still doesn’t have a complete squad at his disposal, making his undefeated run even more impressive. The club will continue to be without Kevin Paredes (foot), Mattias Svanberg (suspended), Denis Vavro (groin), and Rogério (muscular) against Koln.

 

The Bülter did it for Koln

After a fairly productive season with Hoffenheim last season, Marius Bülter joined Koln on a two-year deal, and he has been one of the Billy Goats’ most productive players early on. The 32-year-old forward scored the late winner against 10-man Mainz on opening night, and he also found the back of the net against SC Freiburg. He has formed a strong partnership up front with Isak Bergmann Johannesson, Jan Thielmann, and Jakub Kaminski.

Speaking of Kaminski, the VfL Wolfsburg loanee is in fine form heading into this weekend’s contest. The Polish international scored and provided an assist for his country during their 3-1 win against Finland in the World Cup qualifiers.
