Everton vs Aston Villa
Everton are suddenly in the Top 5 of the 2025-26 Premier League table after the first three matchdays, and they hope to keep it that way this weekend. David Moyes’ men are set to host a struggling Aston Villa side at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this Saturday evening.
After dropping their first match of the season against newly promoted Leeds United (1-0), Everton bounced back with two consecutive victories against Brighton (2-0) and Wolves (3-2), and they are also through to the EFL Cup third round after securing a 2-0 result over Mansfield Town.
In contrast, Aston Villa have yet to win a game this season. Unai Emery’s men were held to a goalless draw against Newcastle United before losing 1-0 to Brentford and 3-0 to Crystal Palace, and they find themselves in an awkward situation after the summer transfer window has shut.

Talking Points
Grealish has been a godsend for Everton
Everton made the bold move of loaning Jack Grealish from Manchester City after the Sky Blues had left him out of their plans this season, and the 30-year-old is showing Pep Guardiola and co. what they’ve been missing.
Grealish may have yet to open his scoring account, but he already has four assists with the Toffees. He picked out Iliman Ndiaye for Everton’s first goal of the 2025-26 campaign and also had a hand in James Garner’s goal to put Brighton away. Grealish followed it up with an influential display against Mansfield Town before another superb performance against the Wolves, where he teed up Beto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for their first goals this campaign.
Many were confused as to why Grealish did not get the call-up from England this international break, considering his superb form. However, Everton fans are happy that their new hero gets the rest he deserves ahead of their Aston Villa match. If he keeps this up, don’t be surprised if the front office pushes to make Grealish’s deal permanent.
Aston Villa in an awkward situation

Emiliano Martinez was not supposed to stay at Villa Park beyond last season, as he had a tearful goodbye to the fans in the final matchday of 2024-25. However, he didn’t get the transfer he wanted, and he’s stuck at Aston Villa for the next few months.
The World Cup winner was linked to a move to Manchester United, but the Red Devils signed Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens instead. Martinez is still a capable goalkeeper, but he’ll likely have to fight his way back into head coach Unai Emery’s good graces.
Emery has deployed Marco Bizot in two of their opening three league games, and there’s a chance for Martinez to regain his place. However, the bigger problem they have to solve is their attack because they have yet to find the back of the net.
History
Everton are winless in their last 12 Premier League games against Aston Villa (D3, L9), and they haven’t beaten them at home since 2015. The Toffees’ last win against the Villans was a 3-1 result at Villa Park in March 2016, and they have failed to score in their last four Premier League home games against them.
However, Everton have won five of their last six Premier League matches (L1), as many as their previous 21 beforehand (W5, D10, L6). The Toffees are looking to win three consecutive home league matches for the first time since May 2024 (W5).
For just the second time in the club’s history, Aston Villa have failed to score in their first three league games of a season, last doing so in 1997-98.
