Crystal Palace will face Liverpool for the second time already this season, and Oliver Glasner’s men aim to stun the defending Premier League champions anew when they convene at Selhurst Park this Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles are among the undefeated teams left in the English top-flight this season. Five games in, and Crystal Palace have two wins and three draws for nine points, which puts them fifth in the table. 

Meanwhile, Liverpool are the only English team with a 100-per cent record across all competitions thus far. Arne Slot’s men won 4-2 against Bournemouth, 3-2 against Newcastle United, 1-0 against Arsenal, 1-0 against Burnley, 3-2 against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, 2-1 against Everton, and 2-1 against Southampton in the EFL Cup third round last night.

Despite their superb form, Liverpool cannot underestimate Crystal Palace, who have been their bogey team in the past few months.

Crystal Palace could reshuffle up front

Crystal Palace extended their unbeaten run with a 2-1 win over West Ham United last Saturday, as Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell found the back of the net. Mateta picked up where he left off last season, as he continues to lead the Eagles in scoring with two goals. Meanwhile, Mitchell already surpassed his goal total last season. 

However, Crystal Palace have a reason to worry after the win, as Yeremy Pino hurt his knee after colliding with Callum Wilson late in the first half. Losing Pino, who joined from Villarreal last offseason, would be a significant blow for Crystal Palace, whose attacking options are limited after selling Odsonne Edouard and Eberechi Eze and loaning Matheus Franca to Vasco de Gama.

Meanwhile, Glasner recently confirmed that Ismaila Sarr would be available for the Liverpool game. Sarr, who has two goals this term, has been out in the past two games due to a hamstring injury, and the Senegalese winger would likely take Pino’s spot in the starting XI.

​Besides the forwards, fans are eager to see how Marc Guehi will perform against the Reds. The English centre-back was supposed to join Liverpool last offseason, but the Eagles’ front office blocked the transfer at the last minute.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot criticised Hugo Ekitike’s “stupid” red card against Southampton last night. The former Eintracht Frankfurt striker scored the winner in the 85th minute, but Ekitike got caught up in the moment, as he removed his shirt and held it up to the fans in celebration, prompting the referee to pull out his second yellow card. Ekitike was already booked in the 53rd minute for dissent.

With Ekitike out, Alexander Isak will likely take the starting No. 9 spot against Crystal Palace. Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai should replace Rio Ngumoha, Federico Chiesa, and Trey Nyoni up front after taking the night off against Southampton.

Crystal Palace have won just one of their last 16 Premier League matches against Liverpool (D3, L12), with the lone win being a 1-0 result at Anfield in April 2024. However, the Eagles held the Reds twice in their last two games, including their penalty shootout win in the Community Shield final last August, their second major trophy this year.

The Eagles are unbeaten in their opening five matches of a top-flight campaign for the first time since 1990-91, when they went on to finish third, their best finish in the league.

Liverpool have won nine of their last 10 away league games against Crystal Palace (D1), which is their longest ongoing undefeated run away from home against any side.
