Burnley vs Newcastle United
2025 has been a year of extremes for Scott Parker’s Burnley. They began the year trailing Leeds United and Sheffield United in the Championship race, and by May, the Clarets were promoted on 100 points. Burnley endured a tough start to their return to the top flight but fought well, until they went on a losing run of seven games, ended only by a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last week.
That hideous sequence has left Burnley in the relegation zone, and they now need to get some wins on the board and quickly. On Saturday, they host Everton, and then, on Tuesday, the Premier League match between Burnley and Newcastle United is the festive entertainment on offer at Turf Moor. Neither game is easy, by any stretch of the imagination, but both are winnable.
On Tuesday, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe returns to the club he managed back in 2012 between spells at his beloved Bournemouth, and he will be keen to guide his team back to winning ways, having collected just one point from the last three games. On Friday, the Magpies fell to a 1-0 defeat away to a depleted Manchester United, and that loss left them in 11th place.
When they met at St. James’ Park early in December, the Magpies ran out 2-1 winners after Burnley’s Lucas Pires had been sent off in the first half. So, while the Premier League 2025 betting odds don’t hold out much hope for the hosts, the Clarets would dearly love to exact some revenge and a crucial three points.
Talking Points
The Clarets need a Christmas miracle
It’s far too early to say that Burnley are already doomed, but for this SBOTOP writer, a die-hard Burnley fan (you’d never guess), it’s been a difficult watch. Seven consecutive losses have left Parker’s men seven points from safety. It looks pretty hopeless, but all is not yet lost. Back in 2018, Burnley had 12 points from 19 games, and under Sean Dyche, they rallied to survive very comfortably. Can the Clarets do it again? Well, miracles do happen.
The club owners have one eye on the next season as they always do, with a young and talented squad and a manager who is proven in the Championship, winning three promotions in three attempts. But Parker is desperate to prove he can cut it in the top-flight, though the cards are stacked against him in this moneybags league.
For a start, this weekend, it would be handy if Fulham take three points from their clash with West Ham United, and then Parker’s men need to do the business at Turf Moor.
Look out for Armando Broja. The former Chelsea striker opened his account for Burnley against the Cherries and is near full fitness, and he could be the man to give the Clarets a fighting chance.
Howe demands more physicality

Newcastle’s Boxing Day meeting with Manchester United turned out to be a post-Christmas hangover for Eddie Howe’s men, who dominated possession and the shot count at Old Trafford but could not break down the Red Devils.
Howe was incredulous at the final whistle, saying, “Part of me cannot believe Manchester United held on there. But we didn’t respond well to the goal. I was disappointed with our inability to grab control of the game because I thought it was there for us to take.
“I don’t think it was a tactical issue for us. I don’t think we looked as physically good as we did against Chelsea when we were physically outstanding. We are disappointed with our actions in terms of trying to score.”
Even in the Chelsea game, the Magpies let a two-goal lead disappear after a Nick Woltemade brace had put them firmly in control at halftime. If they are at their best, Newcastle will beat Burnley, but they can expect a fight and will not have an easy night under the floodlights at Turf Moor.
History
With nine wins, five draws, and just two defeats from the last 16 meetings, the Magpies have had much the better of the head-to-heads, and at Turf Moor, they have won four to Burnley’s two, with one draw.
In terms of recent Premier League 2025 results, the Clarets have had a disastrous run of five losses and a draw from their last six outings, while the Magpies have won two, drawn two, and lost two.
Betting Tip
When the two teams met at the start of the month, the 10-man Clarets almost snatched a draw at the death, and this has been a season of fine margins for Parker’s young team. I’m looking forward to an entertaining bout on Tuesday night, with the visitors strong favourites at odds of 1.70 and Burnley at 5.00. While I doubt the Clarets can get the win they need, I can see the points being shared.
