International Friendly: Morocco Must Stay Focused Amid Controversy

Morocco vs Ecuador

Morocco will face Ecuador in their first match since their controversial coronation as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations champions at the Metropolitano Stadium on Friday evening. With Morocco and Ecuador already qualified for this summer’s World Cup, this International Friendly should provide useful preparation for both nations.

Morocco qualified for the quadrennial tournament after topping Group E with a 100-per cent record during the CAF qualifiers. But since then, the Atlas Lions have changed coaches, and Mohamed Ouahbi, who replaced the popular Walid Regragui, will make his awaited debut this week. Morocco are in Group C alongside Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland.

Ecuador also booked their tickets to the World Cup by finishing second in the CONMEBOL qualifiers table. Sebastian Beccacece’s men have built significant momentum in the past few months, making them a dark horse in the big dance. La Tricolor are in Group E with Germany, Curacao, and the Ivory Coast.

The International Friendly 2026 odds predict a fairly high-scoring affair, so SBOTOP football fans can expect their fair share of International Friendly 2026 highlights this Friday.

Talking Points

Diaz owes Morocco his revival

Brahim Diaz was one of the driving forces behind Morocco’s “triumph” during this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Since he returned to Real Madrid, the 26-year-old winger has established himself as a regular starter under head coach Alvaro Arbeloa.

Diaz has started in all of Real Madrid’s last five matches, which include wins over Celta Vigo, Manchester City (twice), Elche, and Atletico Madrid. He may not have recorded a goal contribution in those matches, but Diaz still made his presence felt.

The best example was in their last game against Atletico Madrid, where Diaz won the penalty that led to Vinicius Jr.’s equaliser and was among the most active players in the final third. He also recorded the most touches inside the opposition box and was joint-top in duels won.

In this international break, Diaz will link up with Ayoub El Kaabi and Abde Ezzalzouli in the final third, with Chemsdine Talbi as backup. El Kaabi recently had braces in Olympiacos’ 3-0 win over OFI and 2-1 win over Panserraikos in the Super League Greece group stage.

Veteran goalie Yassine Bounou is expected to start on Friday, and their backline will feature the full-back duo of Achraf Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui. Furthermore, Fulham centre-back Issa Diop is a new addition for Morocco despite having played for France at the youth level.

Valencia continues to lead Ecuador

Before facing Morocco in an international friendly, Enner Valencia is Ecuador’s fifth-most capped player with 103

Enner Valencia is back in the mix for Ecuador, and the Pachuca star plans to climb up on the La Tricolor’s all-time caps list. At the time of writing, the 36-year-old striker is the outright scoring leader with 48 goals and the fifth-most capped player at 103, six behind fourth-placed Alex Aguinaga.

Head coach Sebastian Beccacece will field a squad blended with experience and youth. They’re a tough nut to crack, as Ecuador boast a strong defencive unit, with the evergreen Hernan Galindez between the sticks and Pervis Estupinan, Piero Hincapie, Joel Ordonez, and Willian Pacho providing cover.

Moises Caicedo will marshal the middle of the park alongside Pedro Vite in a double pivot, with Alan Franco and Gonzalo Plata backing them up. Youngsters Nilson Angulo, John Yeboah, and Jeremy Arevalo should provide help for Valencia in the final third.

History

Friday marks the first-ever competitive meeting between Morocco and Ecuador, and both teams come into this exhibition game in superb form. Morocco haven’t lost since August 2025, notching 22 wins and two draws in their last 24 matches. On the other hand, Ecuador have avoided defeat in their last 15 outings across all competitions (W6, D9), built on their defensive solidity, securing 12 clean sheets.

Morocco actually suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Senegal in the chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final last January. However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the outcome and awarded the Atlas Lions the championship via a 3-0 forfeit. The CAF cited Senegal’s earlier walk-off protest as the reason behind the controversial decision. Since then, Senegal have filed an appeal.

Ecuador are coming off a 2-0 win over New Zealand last November, courtesy of second-half goals from Nilson Angulo and Leonardo Campana. That victory ended a three-game streak of draws – all in friendlies – for La Tricolor, whose previous success was a 1-0 win over Argentina last September in the final matchday of the CONMEBOL qualifiers. If they win on Friday, Ecuador would have back-to-back victories for the first time since March last year.
