International Friendly: Swiss Meet Socceroos in San Diego

Switzerland vs Australia

Switzerland and Australia are set to meet at a weekend bash in California as both sides polish up their acts before the World Cup kicks off next week.

The Swiss team is below the level of the top contenders for World Cup glory but are in the category of potential dark horses, hoping to go deep in the competition, and they certainly have a good draw at the group stage. At 19th in the FIFA World Rankings, Switzerland certainly is a decent outfit and has some quality players in their group. But they only sit eight places above Australia, a nation more famous for Aussie Rules football and cricket than for the beautiful game.

Managed by Murat Yakin, Switzerland will be appearing at their 14th finals, and the latest World Cup 2026 betting odds pitch them as knockout contenders, with a Round of 16 place certainly within their grasp.

The Socceroos, managed by Tony Popovic, have a tougher test in their group, while both teams will see this match as a good benchmark, with just a week to go before the action begins.

Talking Points

Xhaka is Switzerland’s heartbeat

The Swiss are in a relatively gentle group as it happens. Group B has Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar as their opponents, none of which will strike fear into the hearts of Yakin and his team.

And one player who never shirks from any opponent is midfield ace Granit Xhaka, who has once again confounded his doubters after putting in a superb season for Sunderland. The Black Cats returned to the Premier League as Championship play-off winners and then upset the odds in spectacular style, finishing seventh and qualifying for European football for the first time in 53 years.

After a successful two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen, Xhaka surprised everyone when he signed for Sunderland, after a mixed review of his time at Arsenal, and his signing turned out to be a moment of genius on the part of the club’s board as he led the Black Cats with imperious confidence, calm, and direction. A central midfielder who loves a battle and has a thunderbolt shot in his boots, Xhaka is Switzerland’s talisman, the country’s most-capped player, scoring 17 goals in 145 games over an impressive period for the Swiss football team, with two European Championship quarter-final places in 2020 and 2024.

The Switzerland spine starts with Borussia Dortmund stopper Gregor Kobel and Inter Milan centre-half Manuel Akanji, behind Xhaka, who is the man who can find Rennes striker Breel Embolo, who has bagged 24 goals in 86 appearances. And look out for Burnley’s Zeki Amdouni. He has suffered terribly with injuries over the past two campaigns but is fit again, and the “Swiss Messi” will hope to add to his 11 goals from 28 internationals.

Matt is so good for Aussies

Australia are drawn along with the biggest of the host nations, the USA, as well as Turkey and Paraguay, and they will start on relatively even terms with all three of those teams. And I wouldn’t put it past the Socceroos stringing together the World Cup 2026 results they need to proceed to the Round of 32.

Manager Popovic runs a team with few household names, but they make up a useful unit. And much like Switzerland, the Socceroos have their own talisman and captain in 34-year-old goalkeeper Matt Ryan. Now playing with Levante, the former Brighton star made his international debut back in 2012, and he is still the number one choice as the last line of defence, racking up 104 caps.

Before any opposing attacker gets to Ryan, they will need to pass defensive colossus Harry Souttar. At 6’6”, the Leicester City star is a dominant centre-back who is a huge threat in set-piece situations, with 11 goals from 37 games with the Aussies. When they do get on the attack, the Socceroos will hope that St. Pauli midfielder Connor Metcalfe and Norwich City’s 22-year-old striker Mohamed Toure can make mischief in the Swiss defence.

History

The Socceroos have been at the World Cup finals seven times, and they made the Round of 16 for the second time in Qatar in 2022. Meanwhile, the Swiss have competed in 14 finals, though their biggest successes came more than 70 years ago with quarter-final appearances in 1934, 1938, and 1954.

With two wins and one defeat in 2026, a 1-0 loss to Mexico last week, Australia have had a light schedule this year, while Switzerland too have completed just three friendlies, losing to Germany, drawing with Norway, and then beating Jordan 4-1 on the 31st May.

Betting Tip

Switzerland are hot favourites at SBOTOP odds of 1.62 to win this clash at the Snapdragon Stadium, with Australia at 5.00 and the draw at 3.60.

If you think the Aussies have a hope, then the Double Chance: Australia or Draw is priced at 2.25 and I don’t rule that out. However, I expect to see a Swiss victory with the ruthless efficiency we have come to know.
