Qatar vs Switzerland
Switzerland plan to open their World Cup 2026 campaign on a positive note, as they’ll face Qatar at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in Group B action on Saturday evening.
Murat Yakin’s side is expected to take one of the Top 2 spots in the group, and a winnable match against the Maroons should give them confidence to do so. If they take care of business this weekend, Switzerland could secure their passage to the knockouts as soon as next Wednesday, when they take on Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After hosting the finals in 2022, Qatar are back, this time as the visitors. Julen Lopetegui’s men are determined to erase the painful memories of the past and cause some chaos within their group.
Any result other than a win would be disastrous for the Rossocrociati, so we expect them to lower the boom on the Maroons while creating new World Cup 2026 highlights.
Talking Points
Qatar will bank on their locals
For the second finals in a row, Qatar will arrive at the World Cup as underdogs in every meaningful sense.
Julen Lopetegui took over the coaching helm for Qatar during the AFC qualifiers last year. At the time, Qatar were in danger of missing out, having finished fourth in third-round Group A. But the Maroons eventually booked their tickets to the quadrennial tournament after finishing ahead of the United Arab Emirates and Oman in fourth-round Group A.

Qatar will again use the World Cup to provide exposure for their local talents. Akram Afif figures to be their best chance in the final third with his trickery and pace. The 29-year-old forward is joint-third in the all-time scoring list with 41 goals and is solo third in most appearances with 133 caps. Almoez Ali is their all-time leading scorer with 60 goals in 126 caps. Hassan Al-Haydos will serve as their captain.
Qatari fans will also monitor Jassem Gaber’s growth. The 24-year-old midfielder is one of their most versatile players, and he just added more silverware to his CV by helping Al-Rayyan win the QSL Cup and the AGCFF Gulf Champions League this season.
Xhaka’s leadership will rally Switzerland
Granit Xhaka will be playing in his fourth World Cup, and the 33-year-old enforcer is coming off a superb debut season with Sunderland, as he helped the Black Cats finish seventh in the Premier League standings to qualify for the Europa League. At 16 goals in 146 caps, Xhaka is the Rossocrociati’s most experienced player.
Besides Xhaka, Switzerland have experienced campaigners in Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez, Remo Freuler, and Breel Embolo, among others. In this tournament, however, we’ll be looking out for the development of Johan Manzambi and Fabian Rieder. Manzambi almost won the Europa League with SC Freiburg and has contributed five goals and four assists. Rieder is fresh from a fine season with Augsburg, having notched six goals and five assists.
History
Saturday marks only the second competitive meeting between Qatar and Switzerland. The Maroons actually won the first encounter 1-0 in November 2018, as Akram Afif scored a late winner in Lugano.
Qatar were World Cup debutants when they hosted the competition four years ago, but the Maroons failed to make it past the group stage after losing all three games. And their recent form doesn’t inspire confidence heading into Saturday, as they’re on a six-game winless run (D2, L4) following their goalless draw against El Salvador. Overall, they’ve won only two of their last 15 meetings with European countries (D5, L8).
In stark contrast, Switzerland have only one loss in their last 14 (W8, D5). The Rossocrociati last lost their opening game at a World Cup in 1966 (W3, D3).
Betting Tip
The World Cup 2026 odds, unsurprisingly, favour Switzerland to secure their first tournament victory at the expense of Qatar this weekend. The Rossocrociati are 1.22 favourites to take three points, whereas the Maroons are massive 12.00 underdogs, and a draw is at 6.00 in the 1X2 market.
If Switzerland start hot, this could be an early blowout against Qatar, and they’ll use this opportunity to build momentum ahead of their harder matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada.
SBOTOP punters may also want to add Over 2.50 at 1.71, Over 2.75 at 1.91, Over 3.00 at 2.21, and even Total Goal 4-6 at 2.83 to the parlay. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 1-0 in favour of Qatar – the result of their previous meeting – is quite a long shot at 28.00 your bet.
