World Cup 2026: A Truly Golden Battle for a Golden Boot

So, who is going to claim the Golden Boot in football’s golden international tournament? Well, on the eve of the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, the runners and riders are obvious.

This SBOTOP scribe is not going to get fully into the debate about how the leading marksmen in 2026 compare to their predecessors.

My point was well made last month when I said that records will continue to tumble now the tournament has been expanded to the extent where it’s almost harder not to qualify from the group stages.

As a result, many World Cup goals come against limited opposition. That is not to dismiss the genius of Lionel Messi, though.

The Argentine captain leads the way so far with eight goals, the latest in a thrilling last-16 comeback against Egypt. Just imagine how many goals he would have but for two failures from the penalty spot in the past fortnight.

Hot on his heels are a true heavyweight trio in Erling Haaland (seven goals), Kylian Mbappe (seven), and Harry Kane (six) – the latter two the captains of their respective countries. At least one of the quartet will be on their way home come the end of the weekend’s World Cup 2026 results, as Norway and England lock horns.

Haaland’s achievements, to me, are the best of the lot given he lacks the supporting cast of his compatriots. This is the Norway striker’s first World Cup, yet he’s already closing in on a place in the record books. Seven goals, 360 minutes played, and a shot conversion rate of 38.9-per cent, the highest among the four contenders. His efficiency is mightily impressive. He has taken 18 shots, hit the target 12 times and scored six of his 11 big chances.

And there is no doubting the ability of England’s main man as Kane, who won the Golden Boot in the 2018 tournament with six goals, is pushing to surpass that tally.

Mbappe is the current holder after scoring eight goals in 2022. Seven goals, two assists, and 441 minutes played demonstrate his influence in the French squad. Indeed, the detail behind the numbers is just as striking as he has taken 26 shots, hit the target 17 times and has a conversion rate of 26.9-per cent.

Can we rank this quartet above – or at least at the same level – as those who have scored eight or more goals at a single World Cup previously – Just Fontaine, Sandor Kocsis, Gerd Muller, Ademir, Eusebio, Guillermo Stabile, and Ronaldo (the Brazilian version).

Possibly, although the change to the format coupled with extra games means players nowadays have a much better chance of scoring more.

In fact, I would argue that, from midfield, the four goals each scored by Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain) and Jude Bellingham (England) is as fine an achievement so far as Messi, Mbappe, Haaland , and Kane.

Realistically though, they are not going to catch the pace set by the main front men.

Take a look at our World Cup 2026 betting odds, and you will see Messi is the slight favourite ahead of Mbappe (probably due to the favourable draw the South Americans have had, which means they are yet to play any top-tier opposition).

This weekend four will probably become three. Four men, one aim – to score as many goals as possible and be crowned world champions on July 19.
