Real Madrid vs Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are set to face Real Madrid for the second time in three months with the clear aim of making it two wins from two at the Santiago Bernabeu, while taking firm control of this mouth-watering Champions League clash.
Despite dropping points regularly, the Sky Blues qualified automatically for the Round of 16, finishing eighth of 36 in the League Phase Table, while Los Blancos landed ninth and had to work their way through a tricky play-off tie against Benfica, winning 3-1 on aggregate.
Real Madrid’s head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has only been in the job for two months but it’s been something of a rollercoaster. After crashing out of the Copa del Rey to lower league opposition, he led Los Blancos to an impressive set of league results and briefly to the top of the Primera Division table. But Los Blancos also lost their last Champions League group game, to Benfica, and have recently fallen twice in the league.
I’d fancy a draw in this leg but that would be a first for Arbeloa who has won nine and lost four matches while at the helm. Meanwhile Manchester City have been on a consistent run of form, fighting on four fronts, and they come into this game on the back of a 3-1 FA Cup win away to Newcastle United, while Los Blancos scored a late winner to beat Celta Vigo to stay in the La Liga hunt.
This is a fascinating tie between two of the most powerful clubs in Europe, so let’s take a closer look at the two sides and make our call.
Talking Points
Mbappe unlikely to be fit
Los Blancos’ main man Kylian Mbappe is not only the La Liga top scorer but he is also leading the charge for the Champions League Golden Boot on 13 goals, three ahead of Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and six ahead of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. But the Les Bleus star is currently out of action with a knee injury which has kept him out of Los Blancos’ last three games. While Mbappe is back on the grass, reports from the club suggest this clash will come too early for him and Gonzalo Garcia is likely to deputise alongside Vinicius Junior, who has made plenty of his own Champions League 2026 news, not always for the best reasons.

Federico Valverde, who scored Madrid’s 94th minute winner against Vigo will continue as captain while, in the absence of the injured Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, Eduardo Camavinga and Arda Guler are both pushing for a start.
Haaland more hopeful
While Mbappe looks unlikely to feature on Wednesday, Manchester City’s star striker Haaland could well be ready to play some part after he was rested for the Newcastle game, alongside Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Ruben Dias and keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Sky Blues fans have been fretting on the Norwegian’s absence on Tyneside, but Guardiola has calmed nerves by saying he never planned to take Haaland to Newcastle, preferring to rotate his squad and give him and others a breather in advance of the big games to come.
Not that Guardiola is short of options.
January signing Antoine Semenyo looks like he’s been at the Etihad for years, while Omar Marmoush staked a claim with a well taken double against the Magpies. The Sky Blues fluffed their lines in a recent clash with struggling Nottingham Forest, but that was an isolated blip in an impressive run; and I’d say Los Blancos’ selection worries are far greater than their well stocked visitors.
The latest Champions League 2026 betting odds certainly back that up, with the Sky Blues up among the potential winners and Real Madrid further down the list.
History
Real Madrid have won the European crown a record 15 times, last time in 2024, while Manchester City won their first and only Champions League title 12 months earlier in 2023.
Of the previous 17 meetings between these two titans of European football, both have won six and there have been five draws. At the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Los Blancos have won five to City’s two with two draws, but the last time they met, in December, the Sky Blues took a 2-1 victory away from Madrid, coming from behind as Haaland scored the winner.
And with five wins and a draw from their last six games, in all competitions, Guardiola’s men are in better form than Real Madrid who have won four and lost two, with those two defeats coming over the past three weeks.
Betting Tip
For Real Madrid to be priced at 3.40 to win and 3.69 to draw, at home, speaks volumes for the doubt encircling the Santiago Benabeu right now, and the quality the Sky Blues possess in abundance.
Another 2-1 win to Manchester City, at SBOTOP odds of 7.95 is my long shot alternative.
