La Liga: Los Blancos Chance to Win a Madrid Derby

Getafe vs Real Madrid

La Liga leaders Real Madrid hope to maintain their place at the summit of the Primera Division at the Estadio Coliseum on Sunday night when they host midtable Getafe.

After a strong start to the campaign, Getafe are without a win in four and have slid down to 11th in the La Liga table. Thanks to Barcelona’s slip-up in Seville before the international break, Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid have gone top, with Villarreal and Real Betis making up the top four.

And this short trip across the city gives Los Blancos a chance to win a Madrid derby not long after they were walloped by Atletico. By the time the two teams take the field at the 16,500-capacity stadium, Barcelona may have taken back top spot as they play Girona at home on Saturday.

The latest La Liga 2025 betting odds have just nudged towards the Santiago Bernabeu, but should Los Blancos fail to win this local skirmish, the odds will swing back to Catalonia.

Talking Points

Getafe need to sharpen up in front of goal

Getafe finished 13th last term in Jose Bordelas’ second full season in charge, and they have been in the top division for all but one of their campaigns over the past two decades, briefly visiting the second tier in 2016. And they made an electric start to this campaign with an impressive set of La Liga 2025 results, winning three of their first four games to join the leading pack.

But Getafe have picked up just two points from their last four outings, drawing 1-1 at home to both Levante and Alaves while losing 3-0 away to Barcelona and 2-1 away to Osasuna last time out. They have remained a well-organised side and hard to break down, but Getafe have struggled to create many clear-cut chances, with just seven shots and one on target against Alaves.

Wide forward Adran Liso is top scoring with three goals in five games, but has been sidelined for the last three matches, while Borja Mayoral has two in six, scoring in the loss to Osasuna last week. But in reality, captained by keeper David Soria and with 31-year-old Luis Milla patrolling the midfield, Getafe will be concentrating more on keeping Los Blancos at arm’s length on Sunday evening.

Mbappe is hoping to be fit

Will Kylian Mbappé feature in Real Madrid’s La Liga clash with Getafe this weekend?

While Getafe have been struggling in front of goal of late, Los Blancos have been scoring for fun, recovering from the 5-2 humiliation at the hands of Atletico by hammering five past Kairat in the Champions League before winning a tough game away to Villarreal 3-1.

Star striker Kylian Mbappe has been in scintillating form, scoring against the Yellow Submarine to make it nine league goals for the season and put him three clear of Atleti’s Julian Alvarez in the race for the Golden Boot. Vinicius Jr. has five goals and Arda Guler has three in a fast-flowing attack, which has the returned-to-form Jude Bellingham just in behind.

Last week, Mbappe was on tour with France as Les Bleus drew 2-2 with Iceland before beating Azerbaijan 3-0. But in that latter victory, Mbappe picked up an ankle injury and was replaced, setting pulses racing back at Madrid. Now, the club will make a late assessment to see whether the France ace will be fit to face Getafe.

The latest news is encouraging, but Alonso won’t risk his player, who felt pain in his ankle during the match with Villarreal. In total, Mbappe has scored 17 goals this season, 14 for Madrid, and he has made four assists; so he is clearly an integral part of the club’s title hopes.

History

This is one Madrid Derby that Los Blancos have enjoyed in recent seasons, winning four and drawing one of the last five, scoring 12 goals and conceding just two. Real Madrid have won on five of their last six visits to the Coliseum, with Getafe’s last victory over Los Blancos coming in 2012.

And the hosts’ recent form doesn’t give the home fans much hope either. Getafe have lost three, drawn two, and won just one of the last six, while Los Blancos have won five and lost one – that crushing Madrid derby defeat.

Betting Tip

Getafe are at SBOTOP odds of 6.90 to win this derby, cause an upset, and blow the title race apart again. The draw is at 4.11, and an away win is priced at 1.40.

I don’t think Getafe will make life easy for Los Blancos, but I do expect quality to prevail, particularly if Mbappe is fit to play.
