Despite being one of the well-funded clubs in the Premier League, Tottenham almost fell out of the English top-flight for two consecutive seasons, which is embarrassing, to say the least.
Tottenham’s 17th-place finish in 2024-25 was salvaged by their Europa League triumph at the expense of Manchester United. They finished 17th again in 2025-26, buoyed by their 1-0 win against Everton on the final matchday, with West Ham United narrowly missing out.
Instability was the recurring theme for the Spurs last season, as they went through three different head coaches. After going with Thomas Frank at the start of the campaign, Tottenham hired Igor Tudor, who lasted only one month. After Tudor, Tottenham appointed Roberto De Zerbi , who ultimately saved them from relegation.
With De Zerbi at the helm, Tottenham must do everything they can to back him if they’re going to be successful moving forward.
Tottenham have been productive this summer
The Spurs drastically improved their Premier League 2026 odds this upcoming season, given their fruitful summer transfer window thus far. After releasing Randal Kolo Muani and Yves Bissouma, loaning Radu Dragusin to Fiorentina, and selling Luka Vuskovic and Will Lankshear to Brighton and Middlesbrough, respectively, they added Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka for free while spending a fortune to acquire Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi indicated that the Spurs are not yet done this window, especially since they’ve recently been linked to Marcus Rashford and Francisco Trincao to bolster their offence.
Tonali and Fernandes undoubtedly strengthen the midfield, which was a weak point for Tottenham last term. And van Hecke adds much-needed depth at centre-half alongside Cristian Romero, Kevin Danso, and fellow Dutchman Micky van de Ven.
During Tottenham’s first club friendly against MK Dons earlier today, Fernandes, partnered with Tonali in a midfield double pivot, scored the marginal goal in the 1-0 victory. The former West Ham United man struck a first-time volley into the top corner from range, which is a great way to introduce himself to Spurs fans. Dubravka, who replaced Antonin Kinsky in the second half, also had a productive shift between the sticks, which included a sharp save from close range.
The key players for Spurs
Besides their newest acquisitions, Tottenham will be successful this upcoming season on the back of solid campaigns from their holdovers. For starters, they need to score more goals and be regulars in the Premier League 2026 highlights reel, as they had one of the league’s worst attacks with only 48 goals while conceding 57 for a -9 goal difference.
Richarlison was the Spurs’ only double-digit scorer with 11 league goals and four assists. Joao Palhinha was surprisingly second with five goals, and Micky van de Ven, Mathys Tel, and Cristian Romero had four goals each. Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus led Tottenham in the assists category with five each, but injuries hampered them both, especially Simons, who’s still recovering from a torn ACL.
Tottenham also need a healthier season from Dominic Solanke, who only had three goals in 15 appearances last season. The team will also have high expectations for Pedro Porro, who is coming off a superb World Cup campaign, scoring two goals during Spain’s championship run. Djed Spence is also coming off a deep World Cup run, having played eight matches for England.
The goalkeeping position is another question mark for Tottenham, as they might be tempted to sell Guglielmo Vicario, with Juventus as his top suitor. If the Italian shot-stopper leaves, Antonin Kinsky and Martin Dubravka will be tasked with filling the void.
Super early projection for Tottenham this upcoming season
So, where will Tottenham end up in the table next term? Well, they certainly shouldn’t do worse than 17th, given their productive summer transfer window. However, health will probably make or break their 2026-27 campaign.
Having no European football this upcoming season could be a blessing in disguise for Tottenham, as head coach Roberto De Zerbi will likely use the extra days to let his players fully imbibe his tactics. No midweek games mean more time to recover as well.

The Spurs have the tools and firepower to finish in the top half of the table, with fifth place being their realistic best-case scenario, so they can return to playing in Europe again next summer.
