Premier League: London Calls for the Relentless Reds

Fulham vs Liverpool

Premier League leaders Liverpool will head to West London on Sunday to take on Europe-chasing Fulham in the sunshine on the banks of the River Thames.

It sounds idyllic, but Arne Slot’s Reds will have steely determination as, after beating Everton 1-0 on Wednesday night, Liverpool stretched their lead over second-placed Arsenal to 12 points, and they have one hand on the trophy.

Meanwhile, Marco Silva’s Fulham suffered a setback to the Gunners, but they are still in the hunt for a European place, sitting in ninth place and just five points behind Newcastle United in fifth.

Both teams have had cup dismay in recent times, with the Cottagers going out of the FA Cup in a 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace while Liverpool lost the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United shortly after crashing out of the Champions League in a penalty shootout loss to PSG.

So, the objective for both clubs is clear – league points are all that matter.

Talking Points

Will Silva ring the changes?

Fulham followed up their FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace last week with another loss, this time to Arsenal in the league on Tuesday night, and Silva was blunt in his assessment saying: “It wasn’t a good game from us. Arsenal deserved to win. It was not a good first half and it was difficult when they took control.”

At 2-0 down, substitute Rodrigo Muniz halved the deficit in injury time with an assist from Ryan Sessegnon, who had also climbed off the bench.

Sessegnon was welcomed back to Craven Cottage after an injury-hit stint at Tottenham Hotspur, but the fan-favourite has had limited starts on his return. When he did start in a recent match away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sessegnon put in a Man-of-the-Match performance. He scored the opener in the first minute and ran the Wolves defence ragged, as the Cottagers ran out 2-1 winners.

Fulham have only won one game in five since then, and Sessegnon did all he could to change the game against the Gunners when he came on after 77 minutes. His clever run and ball through for Muniz to score was the highlight of the game for Fulham, and fans would love to see him start against Liverpool.

The other substitutes, the recently returned Andreas Pereira, Alex Iwobi, and Willian, all looked lively, so Silva has plenty to ponder before the weekend.

13 points to go for Liverpool

The Reds restored their 12-point lead at the top of the table thanks to their tight win in the Merseyside derby. The result was some respite from a disappointing run which has seen them crash out of the FA Cup and Champions League and lose the Carabao Cup final.

So, the league is Slot’s 100-per cent focus, and with just four wins and a draw needed to see the job through, his concentration will be totally on the task. His team worked hard to restore their 12-point lead at the top of the table with the narrow win over David Moyes’ Everton. After the two teams played out a bad tempered 2-2 draw a few weeks ago, this was always going to be a battle, and Everton centre-back James Tarkowski was lucky to avoid a red card after a horror tackle on Alexis Mac Allister.

Diogo Jota won the game with an individual piece of quality, and the Reds were more than happy to leave Anfield with a grubby derby win.

The Premier League 2025 betting odds pretty much closed the book on a Liverpool triumph a few weeks ago, and the finish line is certainly coming into view. After this game, the Reds face West Ham United at home and Leicester away, and then Tottenham Hotpsur at home, Chelsea away, and Arsenal at home follow in a fascinating run. If the Reds still haven’t done it by then, they have two more chances, away to Brighton and at home to Crystal Palace on the final day.

Liverpool’s Premier League 2025 results would have to fall off a cliff for them to lose this title now and, with nothing else to play for, Slot just isn’t going to let that happen. My money is on a celebration at Stamford Bridge on 4th May.

History

The Reds have had plenty of success over the Cottagers with 22 victories to seven, and there have been eight draws in all competitions since 2001.

Fulham have been in patchy form in recent weeks with three wins and four losses from the last seven, while Liverpool have picked up five wins and suffered two losses in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Betting Tip

At SBOTOP odds of 1.75 to win, Slot’s side are the clear favourites to win this game. But they laboured at times against the Toffees, and they will meet a team which still has plenty to play for and, while suffering from inconsistency, can beat anyone on their day.

The Cottagers are priced at 3.81 to win with the Draw at 3.37, and I think they can get a result. Maybe this is the point Liverpool need to add to the four wins which will bring them the title?
