Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur
At this point, every Premier League game is treated as a final for Tottenham, as they’re on the brink of relegation to the Championship. The Spurs are currently 18th in the English top-flight standings with 34 points, two points adrift of 17th-seeded West Ham United, and they have four games to go.
Tottenham have built some momentum under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, as they’re fresh from a 1-0 win against Wolves – their first league victory this year – and they’ll aim to keep it going when they visit Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.
Aston Villa have had a busy week, as they’re coming off a narrow 1-0 first-leg loss to Nottingham Forest yesterday in the Europa League semi-finals, and head coach Unai Emery is not in a good mood. But at least the Villans’ Top 5 finish is almost set in stone.
Talking Points
Aston Villa’s midfield could be compromised
Given the short turnaround between their game against Nottingham Forest yesterday and Tottenham on Sunday, Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery will likely rotate his squad. However, he won’t have the luxury to do so in the middle of the park.
The Villans lost Amadou Onana to a calf injury against the Tricky Trees, just a few days after the Belgian was forced to miss the defeat to Fulham with a knee injury. Emery confirmed that Onana will miss the game on Sunday. To make matters worse, Onana’s backup, Boubacar Kamara, is also doubtful to play against the Spurs due to a knee injury. Lamare Bogarde will likely take Onana’s spot in the starting XI to link up with Youri Tielemans in their double pivot setup, with Morgan Rogers as the No. 10, and Douglas Luiz could come off the bench.
Tammy Abraham and Leon Bailey could get more playing time after taking the night off against Nottingham Forest. Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen could start if Emery rests Emi Buendia and Lucas Digne. Emery will likely prioritise winning the Europa League and reshuffle the pack.
Tottenham suffer another injury blow
Tottenham’s narrow victory against the Wolves came at a heavy price, as they lost Xavi Simons to a ruptured ACL. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder crumpled to the ground after a collision with Hugo Bueno. After initially getting to his feet, Simons went down again and had to be helped out.

Losing Simons is a huge blow, as the Dutchman has been integral for the Spurs this season. Tottenham have won and scored more when he starts, as Simons is their joint-top playmaker with five assists. Besides Simons, the Spurs will also be without Dominic Solanke due to a hamstring injury. At the time of writing, Simons and Solanke join Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, and Guglielmo Vicario on the sidelines.
History
Sunday marks the third meeting between Aston Villa and Tottenham, and so far, the Villans have won the first two matches (both 2-1). Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia overturned a one-goal deficit created by Rodrigo Bentancur in the reverse league fixture last October, and the duo gave the Villans a two-goal lead (before Wilson Odobert scored a consolation) to eliminate the Spurs in the FA Cup third round last January.
Tottenham have lost six of their last 10 Premier League matches against Aston Villa (W4), more than they had in their previous 34 against them (W19, D10, L5). But the Spurs ended their 15-game winless run last time out and could record consecutive Premier League wins for the first time since their opening two matches of this season against Burnley (2-0) and Manchester City (2-0).
Aston Villa have won just two of their previous seven Premier League games (D1, L4), but could win three in a row at home for the first time since January.
