The Premier League will lose one of its most beloved figures, as Heung-Min Son recently announced he will leave Tottenham this summer in search of a new challenge elsewhere. The 33-year-old winger had been with the North London club for a decade, and he has left an indelible mark during his time there.
Son confirmed this development in a press conference ahead of the Spurs’ preseason friendly against Newcastle United last weekend, marking a fitting end to his time with the team, as the 1-1 draw was played in front of his countrymen at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
The South Korean international will be recognised as one of the greatest wingers ever to play in the English top-flight, and his departure certainly hurts Tottenham’s Premier League 2025 odds next season because he is essentially irreplaceable.
Today at SBOTOP, let’s pay tribute to Son by highlighting his contributions to Tottenham.
Son bids farewell to Tottenham
During his press conference before the Newcastle United game, Heung-Min Son confirmed that he only told a handful of players about his decision. So, he was emotional when he finally announced it to the public. Sitting beside manager Thomas Frank, Son also received his much-deserved plaudits.
“For me personally, I would love to work with him. He is a fantastic person and player. I’ve had the opportunity to watch him from a distance,” Frank said about Son.
“He has been here 10 years at Spurs, not just 10 years but 10 amazing years. He is a truly Spurs legend in every aspect. I actually think one of the best players who has ever played in the Premier League as a winger in my opinion,” he added.
Except for the last two seasons after Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich, Son has formed a potent attacking partnership with Kane, setting each other up 47 times across 229 games together, and no Premier League pair has managed more. The 2020-21 campaign was the highlight of their partnership, as they registered 14 assists for goals between them, the most in a single season.

With 173 goals and 101 assists for Spurs across all competitions, including 127 goals and 71 assists in 333 matches in the Premier League, the South Korean is fourth on the list of Spurs’ record goalscorers, behind only Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves, and Bobby Smith. Since his Premier League debut, only Mohamed Salah (270) has more goal contributions than Son (173), and he’s a lovable character that even rival fans couldn’t find a reason to hate.
His last competitive game for the club was when Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao last term. It was the team’s first piece of silverware since 2008, and the perfect ending to wrap up Son’s North London career.
What’s next for Son?
Heung-Min Son is headed to LAFC as we speak. According to the Premier League 2025 news, the Major League Soccer side reportedly agreed to pay roughly £20 million for the 33-year-old forward, potentially surpassing the transfer fee paid by Atlanta United to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough last February.
He comes to a favourable situation where he can add to his trophy case, as LAFC is the top seed in the Western Conference last season. Son will also reunite with former Spurs teammate, Hugo Lloris, the Black and Gold’s first-choice goalkeeper. He will also likely form a new attacking partnership with Denis Bouanga, one of Major League Soccer’s most dangerous attackers.
Who can fill Son’s shoes at Tottenham?
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank said that the team will have to replace Son by committee, and he is confident that they can do it. The Danish boss pointed to the likes of Brennan Johnson, Mathys Tel, and Wilson Odobert as candidates to take Son’s starting left-wing spot. Dejan Kulusevski and summer signing Mohammed Kudus are also viable options, though Frank is not ruling out any potential late summer additions.
“Brennan Johnson is a player who could play on the left. Also, I think that Wilson Odobert did well against Arsenal and can play on the left, and also, Mathys Tel is a flexible player,” Frank explained.
“I think we have some young, promising players that hopefully can step up and take over from Sonny in the future,” he emphasised.
On the other hand, Cristian Romero, who was linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer, is expected to take the captain’s armband from Son. Rodrigo Bentancur, Guglielmo Vicario, and James Maddison are also likely to assume bigger roles within the team.
