Slot’s First Premier League Triumph is a Nod to Klopp

Jurgen Klopp was always going to be a hard act to follow, but Arne Slot did it with ease in his first year. Slot led the Reds to winning the Premier League trophy in his first full season in charge, and the immediate future looks bright for the Dutchman.

Liverpool were simply a class above everybody else, as they built an unassailable lead in the English top-flight standings. The Reds have a 15-point cushion, and with four games to spare, they clinched the championship with style by demolishing Tottenham 5-1 last weekend.

When they last won the Premiership in 2019-20 under Klopp, there weren’t many people celebrating in Anfield because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But, after a five-year wait, the Reds will finally get the parade they deserve when they play their final home game against Crystal Palace on May 25.

Liverpool had their ups and downs

Liverpool were at the top of the Premier League table for most of the season. But, given how they played during their positive run of Premier League 2025 results, their fans were dreaming of a potential treble.

Slot’s Reds suffered their first major setback during the fourth round of the FA Cup, losing to Plymouth Argyle by one goal last February. It was an epic disaster for Liverpool since they were one of the big favourites to win the trophy (per the SBOTOP Premier League 2025 odds), and because Plymouth Argyle were toiling at the bottom of the Championship. Ryan Hardie scored the match-winning penalty after an unfortunate Harvey Elliott handball near the hour mark.

Their next setbacks came in the Champions League Round of 16 and the EFL Cup final a few weeks later. After winning 1-0 in the first leg against PSG at Parc des Princes, Liverpool conceded an early equaliser from Ousmane Dembele in the return leg and eventually lost via penalties.

A few days later, the Reds witnessed Newcastle United break their long trophy drought in the EFL Cup final. They lost 2-1 after conceding goals from Alexander Isak and Dan Burn before Federico Chiesa scored a late consolation goal.

Those defeats may have been a blessing in disguise for the team since it freed up their schedule. With only the Premier League to focus on, Liverpool went about their business and notched five wins in a row to clinch their crown.

Liverpool’s ol’ reliables did it again

Liverpool wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for their veteran stars showing up. Despite dealing with contract disputes all season, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk stayed professional and led the Reds with their production, composure, and football IQ.

Salah is the Premier League Golden Boot frontrunner with 28 league goals and 18 assists. The Egyptian forward will turn 33 this June, but he is not showing signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, van Dijk remains their rock at the back, and he even scored two league goals and one assist this season. The former Ballon d’Or nominee will turn 34 in July.

Salah and van Dijk entered the 2024-25 campaign with uncertainty looming over their heads since their contracts were about to expire this summer. Liverpool’s front office was reluctant to hand them new extensions because of their advancing age, which, at some point, became a distraction for the team. However, after months of negotiations, Salah and van Dijk finally signed new contract extensions with Liverpool, and the duo rewarded the team with another Premier League title.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are still in the dark over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future. The 26-year-old right-back has been linked with a potential blockbuster transfer to Real Madrid since his contract with the Reds expires this summer.

Alexander-Arnold has contributed three league goals and six assists, but he was dogged by injuries this season. The Englishman was sidelined for several weeks due to an ankle injury he sustained against PSG, and he only returned to the starting lineup for the first time against Tottenham last Sunday.

What lies ahead for the Reds?

After clinching the Premier League title last weekend, Liverpool can coast through their final four matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton, and Crystal Palace.

Slot’s achievements this season are even more impressive because he didn’t choose the players he inherited. Make no mistake about it, it’s a huge summer for Slot since there is plenty of room for improvement if they plan to repeat next term.

Slot wasn’t expected to win the league this season, but fans and pundits will expect his Reds to be in the mix next season, though Slot looks well-equipped to handle and overcome the challenge.
