Serie A: Bergamo Has Been a Happy Hunting Ground for Inter Milan

Inter Milan’s pursuit of their 21st Scudetto takes them on a short trip to Bergamo, where they’ll visit Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday evening for their final Serie A match of the 2025 calendar year.

Cristian Chivu’s side is fresh from a stinging Supercoppa Italiana semi-final defeat against Bologna, losing to them via penalties. However, Inter Milan can get a measure of revenge against I Rossoblu after the Atalanta contest one week from Sunday. They are currently at the top of the Italian top-flight standings with 33 points. But with AC Milan, Napoli, AS Roma, and Juventus close by, Inter Milan must win on the road this weekend.

On the other hand, Atalanta are ninth in the table with 22 points, and beating Inter Milan would surely help in their pursuit of Europe this term. Raffaele Palladino’s side has won three of its last four matches.

Scamacca finding his groove for Atalanta

After a lacklustre start to the post-Gian Piero Gasperini era, Atalanta replaced Ivan Juric with Raffaele Palladino, and the move has paid dividends, with Gianluca Scamacca being the main beneficiary.

Since Palladino took over last November, Scamacca has scored five goals and is now La Dea’s leading scorer. His best performance under Palladino so far was bagging a brace against Cagliari two weeks ago to secure three valuable points instead of settling for a draw.

With Ademola Lookman playing for Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations, as well as Ivorian right-back Odilon Kossounou, Atalanta are hoping that Scamacca will continue to score goals alongside fellow frontmen Charles De Ketelaere and Lazar Samardzic. The Italian striker has scored in both of his last two Serie A matches against Inter Milan, albeit both were more than two years ago, due to injuries.

Furthermore, Atalanta received a lineup boost on the rearguard, as skipper Berat Djimsiti is upgraded to probable for Sunday’s contest. The 32-year-old centre-back has made 12 Serie A starts this season but was out against Genoa last week due to a hamstring injury. Djimsiti’s comeback surely helps Atalanta’s defence, which has conceded an average of 1.12 goals per match. 

 

Inter Milan could start Calhanoglu again

Inter Milan recently welcomed Hakan Calhanoglu back to the bench in their Supercoppa Italiana loss against Bologna. And if everything goes to plan, the Turkish playmaker could regain his place in the starting XI against Atalanta.

Before missing time due to an adductor injury, Calhanoglu contributed six league goals and one assist – good for the second-highest scoring mark for the Nerazzurri. He’ll likely play behind the strike duo of Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, with Nicolo Barella, Piotr Zielinski, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan playing ancillary roles in the middle of the park.

Calhanoglu’s impending return will certainly help Martinez, who has been directly involved in nine goals across 12 previous Serie A appearances against Atalanta. 

Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri will continue to be without Francesco Acerbi, Matteo Darmian, Yoan-Ange Bonny, and Denzel Dumfries.

History will weigh heavily on the visitors’ side this weekend, as Inter Milan have had Atalanta’s number for quite some time now. The Nerazzurri are enjoying an eight-game winning streak over La Dea across all competitions. Overall, Inter Milan are undefeated against Atalanta in 15 consecutive matches (D4), with their last loss coming in a 4-1 result in November 2018.

Last season, Inter Milan won all three of their meetings against Atalanta via an aggregate tally of 8-0, including a 2-0 result in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final.
