Serie A: The Most Improved Players

The 2024/25 Serie A campaign has delivered some of the best football in Europe and the race for the Scudetto is hotting up as Napoli home in on a second title in three years, with Inter Milan breathing down their necks.

And it’s been a great campaign for some of Serie A’s biggest stars with plenty over-achieving on last season’s exploits. So, let’s take a look at our SBOTOP top four, the players who have made some truly spectacular Serie A 2025 highlights.

Moise Kean – Fiorentina

Arguably the standout improver in the Italian top flight is Fiorentina striker Moise Kean, who has followed up a 2023/24 campaign without a goal with a stellar performance and an impressive tally of 23 goals in all competitions, and 17 in Serie A. Kean is a Juventus academy graduate, making his breakthrough in 2016 before moving to Everton in the Premier League where his career stalled, as he scored just four goals in 39 outings. After a stint at Paris Saint-Germain, Kean returned to Juventus where he scored 14 goals over three seasons; but now he has found his home in Florence.

The 25-year-old forward is finally realising his undoubted potential and he has attracted attention from some of the top clubs in Europe, with Barcelona weighing up a move and Arsenal also rumoured to be interested.

Mateo Retegui – Atalanta

He’s in the lead of the race for the Capocannoniere with 24 goals, seven more than Kean, and La Dea’s sharp shooter Mateo Retegui has matured superbly as a player since his summer move from Genoa. His return in 31 games makes him a three in four scorer and that is some achievement in Serie A, a league famed for its robust defences.

Mateo Retegui has been vital in Atalanta's resurgence in the 2024-25 Serie A season

The Argentine-born striker, whose dad and sister were both international hockey stars, seemed an unlikely candidate to replace the great Ciro Immobile as the Azzurri’s main striker but, under Gian Piero Gasperini in Bergamo he has become one hot property. Very comfortable on the ball with superb positional sense and a willingness to shoot, he is the perfect fox in the box but Retegui has also developed much more in his all-round game. He failed to score in La Dea’s 4-0 win over Monza at the weekend but he made two assists and was instrumental in a third goal. Alongside Ademola Lookman, Retegui is part of one of the most lethal strike partnerships in European football and is a big reason the Serie A 2025 betting odds say Atalanta will be hard to dislodge from their current third place, and are destined to play Champions League football next term.

Whether Retegui will still be a La Dea player next season remains to be seen as his stratospheric climb has seen him linked with a move, and Atalanta will be prepared to sell at the right price. The club resisted an offer of 70m Euros to take Retegui to the Saudi Pro League in January but the club’s management will be receptive to offers in summer, with Juventus reported to be at the front of the queue. There is also interest from both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in England and that could start a bidding war, though I suspect Retegui will be keen to play Champions League football so that may rule Spurs out…unless the Londoners win the Europa League.

Scott McTominay – Napoli

I’m not saying McTominay was previously an underperformer but, before his transfer to Napoli last summer, he had fallen into the malaise at Old Trafford alongside many of his Manchester United team-mates. In the Premier League, he was known as a defensive midfielder, sometimes box-to-box, but in Naples, the powerful Scot has become a talisman for the Napoli fans with his all-action displays and eye for a spectacular goal. I Partenopei are top of the League and in great shape to win the Scudetto and if they do McTominay will become a club legend.

This is one of the signings of the summer and McTominay has proved himself to be the perfect midfielder to succeed in Italy.

Nuno Tavares – Lazio

Arsenal loanee Tavares has had his most productive season of his career so far, proving himself as a classy defender with superb positional sense and a real threat when he raids down the wing, with an impressive eight assists from 21 appearances for Champions League-chasing Lazio. His mature performances have linked him to a move to Juventus who are clearly on the lookout for young talent to improve their squad this summer. Tavares has become one of the most sought after left-backs in Italy and with his chances at Arsenal limited he may be receptive to a move to Turin or a permanent switch to Lazio, having settled comfortably in Rome.

He picked up an injury in Lazio’s recent win over Atalanta, limping off in the first half, and he missed the recent Rome derby, but Tavares has done enough to make it into my pick of the four biggest improvers in this year’s Italian top league.
