Serie A: Victory Against Torino Can Let Napoli Keep the Challengers at Bay

Despite sitting at the top of the Serie A table, Antonio Conte has gotten mixed reviews recently. After opening their 2025-26 campaign with three consecutive wins against Sassuolo (2-0), Cagliari (1-0), and Fiorentina (3-1), Napoli haven’t won on the road with defeats against Manchester City (2-0) in the Champions League and AC Milan (2-1), though they won against Pisa (3-2), Sporting (2-1), and Genoa (2-1) recently. 

As a result, several teams have caught up to them, particularly AS Roma, with whom they are level on 15 points. With AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus also lurking, Napoli must not let their guard down against Torino, who are determined to win their second league game of the season.

Torino are 16th in the Italian top-flight standings with only five points, and Marco Baroni’s men are in danger of being in the relegation zone.

Torino struggling under Baroni

It has been a rough start for Torino under head coach Marco Baroni, as they only picked up five points from a possible 18 in the first six matchdays of the 2025-26 campaign. During this stretch, Il Toro have conceded 13 goals and scored only five on the other end. This is the third time in their history that they’ve conceded this much at this point of the season after 1958-59 and 2020-21. 

Torino have endured embarrassing defeats against Inter Milan (5-0) and Atalanta (3-0), but they somehow notched an upset 1-0 win over AS Roma last month. Last time out, Il Toro had the golden opportunity to return to winning ways, but they dropped the ball against a depleted Lazio squad.

Torino were up 3-2 in stoppage time, as Saul Coco headed the ball in the 93rd minute, but chaos ensued. During the 103rd minute, Tijjani Noslin picked Ali Dembele’s pocket inside the box, and he drew a foul on Coco, whom he bumped into on a drive. After a VAR check, Lazio earned the penalty, which Danilo Cataldi coolly converted.

 

Hojlund regaining his form at Napoli

Rasmus Hojlund is better suited to play in Italy than England, as he is thriving at his new home in Naples. The Danish international wanted to fight for his place at Manchester United, but the front office went with Benjamin Sesko, so Hojlund had to leave when Napoli was knocking on the door.

This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as Hojlund seized the starting No. 9 spot, with Romelu Lukaku injured. He has scored four goals in six games for the Partenopei since his summer loan switch, which includes a buy clause. For context, that tally is the same as the number of Premier League goals he scored for the Red Devils in the previous campaign.

It also helps that Hojlund is playing alongside Scott McTominay, whom he also played with at Old Trafford, and Kevin De Bruyne, one of the world’s best playmakers. If Hojlund generates more Serie A 2025 highlights, maybe he can replicate McTominay’s redemption arc last term.

Napoli are undefeated in 19 of their last 20 Serie A matches against Torino (W14, D5) while scoring 40 goals, including a league double last season via an aggregate tally of 3-0. Torino’s only win in that period was a 3-0 result at home in January 2024. The Partenopei have also won eight of their last 10 Serie A away matches against Il Toro (D1, L1), scoring 21 times and keeping a clean sheet in five of their last six.

Torino have failed to score in each of their last four Serie A home games, and they’ve never gone five straight without a goal in the competition’s history. Saturday also marks the fourth time Marco Baroni faces Antonio Conte, and the former has two victories and one draw against the latter.
