French Open: Djokovic Breaks New Ground With Win No. 100

Novak Djokovic is through to the 2025 French Open quarterfinals after a relatively easy first three matches, and he’ll aim to go all the way this time around. When the Serbian international made it this far last year, an injury caused him to retire against Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals.

Carlos Alcaraz’s title defence is still alive after surviving three consecutive four-setters, and he’ll be up against another solid challenger in the quarterfinals. Despite his ups and downs in the Grand Slam, the French Open 2025 odds have Alcaraz as one of the favourites to win it all at Roland Garros.

Elsewhere, Jannik Sinner is looking good, having been dominant so far this tournament. The Italian international is the top-ranked ATP player for a reason, and opponents would be wise to steer clear of him until the later rounds.

Djokovic far from done at Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic broke new ground in his 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win over Cameron Norrie last Monday. For the first time in his decorated career, the Serbian international notched 100 wins at a major event. The three-time French Open champion is also only the second player to reach this major milestone, joining 14-time titlist Rafael Nadal (112). Overall, Djokovic has a 100-16 record at Roland Garros.

After a relatively easy opening set, Djokovic got off to a slow start in the second set with multiple errors. However, the 38-year-old regrouped with a series of powerful winners and points at the net. Norrie had a medical timeout to treat his left ankle before serving at 3-4 in the second, and the Briton wasn’t the same since then. Djokovic went on to win eight of the final 10 games to clinch a two-hour, 14-minute win and become the oldest Roland Garros quarterfinalist since 39-year-old Istvan Gulyas in 1971.

Up next for Djokovic is last year’s runner-up, Alexander Zverev, who is coming off a walkover win over Tallon Griekspoor. When these two players last met in January, Djokovic retired during the Australian Open semifinals.

Alcaraz survives another four-setter

2025 French Open odds have Carlos Alcaraz as one of the favorites to win it all at Roland Garros.
Carlos Alcaraz plays a forehand return to Ben Shelton during their men’s singles match at the 2025 French Open

Carlos Alcaraz needed three hours and 19 minutes to secure an entertaining 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Ben Shelton last Sunday. It was the Spaniard’s 100th tour-level win on clay courts.

Alcaraz saved three set points in the opening set to take the lead and withstood Shelton’s powerful shots to race to a two-set lead, but Shelton was far from done. The American international exchanged breaks with Alcaraz early in the third set and saved a break point to hold at 4-4. A helpful net chord gave Shelton two set points in the next game, and he capitalized to pressure Alcaraz. Alcaraz regrouped and broke for a 2-1 lead in the fourth set. The pair exchanged shots, but Shelton eventually ran out of gas.

“Today I fought against myself, against the mind,” Alcaraz said. “I just tried to calm myself. In some moments I was mad, I was angry with myself. Talking not really good things but I am really happy to not let those thoughts play against me. I tried to calm myself down and I tried to keep going. That is what I tried.”

Alcaraz aims to become just the third man this century to successfully defend his French Open title alongside Rafael Nadal and Gustavo Kuerten. The young Spaniard is also chasing his fifth major and third clay-court crown this term, having won at ATP Masters 1000 events in Monte-Carlo and Rome. He’ll be up against Tommy Paul in the next round.

Sinner hit new personal milestone after latest win

Jannik Sinner is arguably the most in-form player at Roland Garros since he has yet to drop a set this tournament. The Italian international is coming off a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win over Andrey Rublev last Monday to book his ticket to the quarterfinals.

Rublev struck three forehand winners to carve out two break points in the opening game, but that didn’t shake Sinner’s confidence. Sinner responded by hitting one baseline winner after another to win the first set by only 30 minutes, setting the tone for the rest of the contest.

Sinner joins Frances Tiafoe and Novak Djokovic as the only men to reach the quarterfinals without dropping a set. He also improved to a 20-5 record at Roland Garros. The 23-year-old remains the top-ranked ATP player for the 52nd consecutive week uninterrupted in his first stint, joining Roger Federer, Jimmy Connors, Lleyton Hewitt, and Novak Djokovic as the only players to achieve this feat.
