Medvedev’s Downward Spiral Continues After US Open Meltdown

Daniil Medvedev continues to slide down in the ATP rankings after yet another early tournament exit. His trip to the United States has been rough because, after losing to Adam Walton in the Round of 64 of the Cincinnati Masters two weeks ago, Benjamin Bonzi defeated him in the first round of the 2025 US Open. Not only did Medvedev lose, but he also had a breakdown in the process due to an on-court incident involving a photographer and the umpire.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner’s title defence is off to a positive start with a first-round victory over Vit Kopriva, and the US Open 2025 odds have him as the heavy favourite to win the Grand Slam. Carlos Alcaraz figures to be his closest challenger, considering they faced off in several high-profile finals this season, and the young Spaniard is rocking a new look.

Here are the latest US Open 2025 updates in Flushing Meadows, courtesy of SBOTOP.

Medvedev breaks down after on-court disruption

Daniil Medvedev’s greatest triumph came under the New York spotlight when he won the 2021 US Open, and it will also be remembered as the place of one of his most infamous defeats. The 29-year-old suffered his third consecutive first-round loss at a major tournament last Monday, with Benjamin Bonzi winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4. The Frenchman also beat Medvedev in the opening round of Wimbledon not too long ago.

An on-court incident marred the match during the third set when Bonzi was serving to win, as a photographer entered the court to move along the baseline. Chair official Greg Allensworth opted to grant Bonzi a second first serve after ruling interference, which sent Medvedev into a rage. Medvedev smashed his racket on the hard court amid boos from the crowd, and he berated Allensworth for the questionable decision.

Despite this, Medvedev won the third set and scored a bagel in the fourth set. However, Bonzi regained his composure in the fifth set, as he fought off an apparent leg injury to come from a break down to break Medvedev twice in his final three service games for the win.

After the match, the photographer had his media credentials revoked, and Medvedev, whose record on the season is 26-17, said he is expecting to be fined for his outburst. The Russian international hasn’t won a tournament since 2023.

Sinner romps through the second round

Jannik Sinner is trying to be the first ATP player since Roger Federer from 2004 to 2008 to repeat as the US Open champion, and the young Italian is on his way. He waltzed to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 win over Vit Kopriva, as Sinner only needed one hour and 38 minutes to advance to the next round.

Sinner’s latest victory is a huge confidence boost, especially after he ceded the Cincinnati Masters crown to Carlos Alcaraz last week because he was sick. Before this, Sinner won 26 consecutive matches on hard courts. He also withdrew from the US Open mixed doubles tournament to have more days to rest.

“Obviously very happy that I’m healthy again, that we did our best to be in the best possible shape here,” Sinner said.

“Amazing memories,” he said of returning to New York. “Obviously, every year is different. You come here starting this tournament, hopefully, the best possible way, which I did.”

Sinner earned his second Grand Slam title when he beat Taylor Fritz in the final last year in Flushing Meadows. He then went on to add two more this year at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The world No. 1 plans to join Rod Laver, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic as the only men to reach the final of all four Grand Slams in the same year in the Open Era.

Alcaraz raises eyebrows in the opening round

Carlos Alcaraz looked a cut above his competition (pun intended), as he cruised to a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 win over Reilly Opelka last Monday while sporting his new look: a shaved head. The world No. 2 made only 17 unforced errors, won 50 of 58 of his first-serve points, saved all three break points he faced, broke Opelka thrice, and improved to 19-0 in opening matches at Grand Slams.

During his on-court interview after his win, Alcaraz asked if the fans liked his new hairdo, and he got a resounding yes. However, some of his fellow ATP players roasted him for his new look.

“It’s horrible. It’s terrible. It’s definitely terrible. That’s my guy, though,” Frances Tiafoe said about Alcaraz’s haircut. “Funny, I looked at him, and I was like, ‘I guess you’re aerodynamic.’”
